Huffstatler joins CrescentCare as Director of Development

Huffstatler brings to CrescentCare 24 years of development and community leadership experience in New Orleans and the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Most recently, he held the position of Chief Advancement Officer with New Orleans Area Habitat for Humanity and, previously, served as Senior Development Officer with Tulane University Law School and Regional Chief Development Officer for the American Red Cross in both Louisiana and Mississippi. He also served as Chief of Staff and Government Claims Lead for the BP Gulf Coast Restoration Organization with James Lee Witt Associates. Jay has a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of Southern Mississippi and an Associate of Arts from Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College. “Jay’s vision, insight, and fundraising expertise will be instrumental in our continued growth and as we open our new MidCity location at 2515 Canal Street ,” said Alice Riener, CrescentCare's Chief Executive Officer. “We are thrilled to build upon the incredible foundation established over the last 40 years and eager to make an even more meaningful impact through our services and respond to the urgent needs of our community,” added Riener. Jay serves as president of the board of the Gulf South LGBTQ+ Chamber of Commerce, communications committee chair and National Philanthropy Day co-chair of the Association of Fundraising Professionals Greater New Orleans Chapter, and board member for Forum for Equality Louisiana. CrescentCare’s 2nd Annual Back to School Fair Brings Free School Supplies, Vaccines, and Health Screenings to the Community on July 24

On Saturday, July 24 from 10 am to 1 pm, CrescentCare will hold its second annual Back to School Fair at its St. Roch location at 1631 Elysian Fields Ave. Staff will distribute backpacks and school supplies (generously donated by Avita Pharmacy and Staples), offer free hearing and vision screenings for youth, COVID vaccinations for all people 12 and older, as well as face painting, snacks, and giveaways. CrescentCare and Partners Launch Research Collaborative on COVID-19 Outcomes for LGBTQ People

The We Count Collaborative brings together data on more than 45,000 LGBTQ patients from front-line healthcare providers in a nationwide research and data-sharing project to protect the health of LGBTQ communities. In order to bridge the gap in knowledge about COVID-19 health experiences, including rates of infection and outcomes, for LGBTQ people, five federally qualified health centers (FQHCs) that specialize in reducing barriers to care for LGBTQ populations – along with The PRIDE Study, the first large-scale, long-term national health study of LGBTQ+ people – created a research collaborative called “The We Count Collaborative: Impacts of COVID-19 on LGBTQ Health.” The We Count Collaborative is made up of five FQHCs: Whitman-Walker Institute, Callen-Lorde Community Health Center, CrescentCare, Howard Brown Health and the Los Angeles LGBT Center; and the Stanford Medicine-based The PRIDE Study with a collaborating site at the University of California, San Francisco. These organizations are all on the front lines of the country’s response to the COVID-19 crisis and therefore can collect real-time data that is crucial for this project and future public health policy recommendations. As COVID-19 first started to ravage communities in 2020, LGBTQ-health focused organizations advocated for the collection of sexual orientation and gender identity data to understand the full health needs of the public. “Collecting information on how LGBTQ people are experiencing the COVID-19 pandemic helps us to understand how overlapping social stigmas and discrimination can cause illness among people who are often marginalized, and how public health policies can intervene to stop the spread of disease,” said Don Blanchon, CEO at Whitman-Walker Health System – which oversees the Whitman-Walker Institute. This advocacy continued throughout 2020 culminating in an open letter to the Association of State and Territorial Health Officers (ASTHO) to ensure outreach to LGBTQ communities and requesting that sexual orientation and gender identity data collection be a mandated part of COVID-19 vaccine distribution efforts. "It is essential that LGBTQ communities are supported through this pandemic including access to COVID-19 diagnostics, treatment and life-saving vaccinations,” said Jason Halperin, infectious disease physician at CrescentCare and the medical director of its COVID-19 clinic and vaccination program. “Gathering data to understand barriers is vital to improving our health system." With the CDC’s 2021 report of sexual minority persons experiencing higher rates of underlying illnesses that are related to severe outcomes of COVID-19, data tracking on the health impacts of COVID-19 in LGBTQ communities is more imperative than ever. Whitman-Walker Institute, Callen-Lorde Community Health Center, CrescentCare, Howard Brown Health and Los Angeles LGBT Center are uniquely positioned to track and report on this data as well as advise on best practices for addressing the health needs of LGBTQ communities.
